By Roxanne A., Neighborhood Team Leader
I’m in with President Obama’s campaign for 2012 because I don’t want our legacy to our grandchildren to be pervasive poverty, either around the world or here in the U.S.. Poverty destroys quality of life and diminishes everyone, even those who are rich in the midst of poverty.
President Obama understands poverty and how to overcome it. He knows that poor people are not poor because they are lazy or stupid, but because they do not have access to the resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty. He knows that health care, education, clean water and high quality food are all building blocks for stronger communities and more peaceful nations. I have watched President Obama make difficult choices in order to ease the way for disadvantaged people. And he is willing to recognize the responsibility of the United States to contribute to the efforts of low-income countries as they fight disease and poverty to make better lives for their citizens.
President Obama always calls us to be our better selves, even in the face of discouraging circumstances. He is capable of both steely determination and thoughtful reconsideration of new facts. These are qualities we desperately need in the difficult circumstances we face.
