During summer organizer training, summer organizers heard from Lynda, a New Orleans team leader, on how to use their personal stories to connect with prospective volunteers.
Lynda uses as an example New Orleans residents' shared experience with Katrina:
In New Orleans, we have a shared personal story through our struggles with Katrina and the ongoing recovery of our city. Although every story is different, we can still empathize with each other. My personal experience prompted me to be very active in the original in the ‘08 campaign.
Summer organizers also had an opportunity to practice their own personal stories. Jac, a newly recruited summer organizer spoke about her lack of health insurance and her inability to pay for much-needed surgery.
At one time in my life I had to get surgery, but I couldn’t afford it at the time. As luck would have it, I was selected as contestant on a well-known game show, and won enough money to pay for the surgery I needed. I was lucky, but some people aren’t that lucky. No one should have to rely on luck to get the health care they need and that’s why I support the President.
