When Barack Obama first ran for president in 2008, I was sidelined. My son had been born premature at the beginning of the summer and only came home at the end of August. I had to view the last months of the campaign from my living room couch.
Four years later, my son is a healthy, thriving, and sometimes challenging four-year-old, and I am an Obama Organizing Fellow!
I was unsure what to expect when I came to our first retreat at the beginning of September. Would I be older? The only parent? Would I feel out of place?
I shouldn’t have been concerned. Around eighty of us gathered at a union hall on a gorgeous weekend to tell our stories and learn how to organize and energize people to vote for Barack Obama on November 6. The room was full of incredible people from all over Minnesota who brought with them different backgrounds, experiences, and voices. It’s part of what makes this journey so exciting.
Over the course of the next 45 days, I get to work alongside 90 other Fellows, each one committed to re-electing President Obama and each one telling his or her own story of support and community. It’s a welcoming and fun environment, and you can join us at one of our many field offices all over Minnesota.
There’s a lot to do in the next few weeks, and we need you. Sign up to Volunteer!
