Four years ago, I was attending Luther College in Decorah, Iowa when I heard then-Senator Barack Obama speak to a small audience in an Iowa cornfield.
Until that speech, I had never thought of a campaign as being anything more than politics - but that experience changed my mind. I realized the President and his campaign represented something more. It prioritized building relationships one volunteer and one voter at a time, mobilizing the grassroots to have a real impact on the lives of hard-working people who love their country and want to make a difference.
It's what got me to volunteer in 2008, and it is this same mission that led me to put my life as a graduate student in public policy on hold to become an Organizing Fellow last summer. As a Fellow, I learned valuable lessons about grassroots organizing and what it means to be a community leader. I was humbled by the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the everyday citizens who make extraordinary contributions to the campaign. It was hard work, but the rewards are greater than I ever could have imagined. My experience as an Organizing Fellow taught me things that go far beyond being an organizer. The truth is that being an organizer is the best education I I've ever had.
Three months into my Fellowship I was offered the opportunity to become a Regional Field Director here in Minnesota. What we do every day, building relationships, organizing events and meeting the volunteers and supporters that make our campaign great, goes beyond politics. This campaign can change your life in so many ways. It's hard work and you will sometimes find yourself getting outside of your comfort zone. But there is nothing that compares to the opportunity to wake up every day and go to work for our country and the President.
And that is why I want to encourage everyone to apply to become an Organizing Fellow with OFA-Minnesota. Having started as an Organizing Fellow, I can tell you how gratifying it is to be a part of our campaign at the grassroots. Respect, empower and include is our motto and we live it each and every day. Our campaign is about making a difference, not only at a national level, but right here in Minnesota. So I hope that you'll join me and thousands of others to continue the progress that this country needs.
