As someone who’s only been out of college a few months and who’s really only had one other job, it sounds a little silly to say that the Fall Fellowship is the best job I’ve ever had. Silly or not, it’s true. I’m struck on a daily basis by how much more fun and exciting and dynamic my job on the campaign is than any other work or internship experience I’ve had.
When I was in college, my plan was to go to law school and pursue a career as an attorney, and so I took internships in that field and my first job was at the kind of law firm I hoped to end up working at later on. Every day there I would come home after eight hours of being bored at my desk and think about how depressing life after college would be, working full time for the rest of my life and being that bored all the time.
Being a Fall Fellow for Organizing for America has made me rethink all of that. Every day on this job I get to go out into my community, meet people and motivate them to work toward the goals that I’m passionate about. Every day I feel challenged and excited about the work I’m doing, and every day I think about how much happier I am at this job than I would be working anywhere else.
Don’t get me wrong- organizing is hard work. There are times when I’m exhausted or frustrated and even a little jealous of my friends who have desk jobs and tidy 9 to 5 workdays. But even in those moments I feel so lucky to be doing what I’m doing for President Obama and for Arizona. More important than how much fun I’ve had doing this job is how passionate I feel about the work that we’re doing here in Phoenix. As Fall Fellows on this campaign, we’re contributing in a real way to winning this state for President Obama and keeping our country in the hands of someone who shares our values and who’s fighting for the things that matter to us. What job could be better than that? Sign up to be a Spring Fellow and work with me next year to win Arizona.
