We arrived by the hundreds, soon reaching as many as a thousand people crammed into the large cafeteria of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. It was the evening of October 26, and we had all gathered to kick off the campaign to re-elect President Obama with a rally.
Huddled together, we waited anxiously for keynote speaker and DNC Chairperson Debbie Wasserman Schultz, as well as Governor Martin O’Malley, Senator Ben Cardin, Representatives Elijah Cummings and Donna Edwards.
As they spoke, I asked a number of people what they were hoping to hear that night. One woman I spoke to—an independent—explained that she was so inspired by President Obama that she knew he had to be re-elected, and wanted to see if others shared her enthusiasm in keeping him in the job. Many were “fired up and ready to go.” Others were cautiously optimistic. But everyone came together when the speakers began outlining the importance of re-electing President Obama—the key to ensuring our economic recovery.
“The challenges we face are too serious, and the stakes are too high” for our country to allow anyone other than President Obama to deal with them, said Senator Cardin from the start. It would take hard work because “no one said change would be easy”.
Each speaker urged us to get “fired up” and spoke excitedly about the challenges ahead, along with the capabilities of teams of grassroots volunteers and organizers working together to meet them. As they spoke, there was a noticeable change in the crowd. Folks seemed committed, they seemed fired up.
The speakers reminded us of all the challenges President Obama has faced, and the amazing accomplishments made thus far. It made us even more proud of our President and in ourselves for our renewed commitment to him.
We all left that evening feeling inspired and fired up. We felt the enthusiasm we were seeking in ourselves and each other; we were excited, energized, and ready to get to work. As one elderly gentleman had stated to me earlier in the evening, “we have the energy” to do what needs to be done to re-elect President Obama, “we’re just waiting for it to be tapped”.
