This past weekend, we had the privilege of spending some time with noted LGBT rights advocate Cleve Jones at Rainbow Fest in Reno.
A true icon in the world of organizing, Cleve urged the crowds to support the President and get involved:
"I'm supporting the President because for the first time in my life I believe full equality for LGBT Americans is within reach. We have made so much progress in the last few years and we need to re-elect the President to go further!"
Cleve's presence made the weekend all the more memorable for our organizers, including our Youth & LGBT Vote Director, Stan WIlliams:
"Cleve has been fighting for equal rights for LGBT Americans for decades, having him join us at the Rainbow Festival was inspiring because he has done so much for the community."
Cleve encouraged supporters to register to vote and sign up to volunteer, but most importantly he did what our organizers do every day, he took the time to reach out into the Nevada community one person at a time.
We're so proud Cleve chose to spend this time with us and our staff, and we can't thank him enough.
In the last four years, President Obama has championed numerous measures to benefit America’s LGBT community. He kept his promise to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” hosted the first-ever White House conference on bullying prevention, eliminated wait lists for the AIDS Drugs Assistance Program, signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Crimes Hate Prevention Act into law and was the first U.S. president to express his support for marriage equality.
