• Cynthia's Grandkids, Victor's Son

In New Mexico, we know how important it is to keep our families safe, healthy, and happy. But, for many, this is easier said than done. Meet two New Mexicans whose families have been helped by President Obama's leadership on health care reform.

Cynthia in Albuquerque has two grandsons who have battled life-threatening allergies since infancy. "The younger of the two has had several epi-pen incidents, each accompanied by an expensive trip to the emergency room or hospital stay," she recalls.

Her third grandson has also been diagnosed with asthma.

"The ACA will help keep insurance companies from denying these children coverage because of their pre-existing conditions, and will eliminate lifetime caps. They had already almost reached the lifetime cap until the ACA was implemented."

Cynthia is not the only one whose family has been stressed due to doctor visits and grim prognoses. Victor from Anthony also knows the pain of having a child with a life-threatening illness.

"My elder son [Colton] is battling cancer" Victor says, "In 2010, a small red bump appeared on his forehead, and didn't go away. In fact, it got bigger, so we went to our doctor and he said 'come back in a couple months.' "

After many more visits to the doctor, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and finally a call to bring him home from school because of the excruciating pain, Colton finally got an appointment—two painful days and 300 miles later.

The doctor immediately identified the bump as a tumor, and was eventually diagnosed with Stage Two Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Thankfully, the cancer was curable and treatable. Colton will continue receiving treatment at the UNM Children's Cancer Center until February 2013, and is doing great.

The Affordable Care Act made important revisions to eligibility for Medicaid and SCHIP, allowing Colton and his family to receive these benefits in the midst of this difficult situation.

"Medicaid has paid all of his medical bills" says Victor, "The ACA has made it possible to focus on my son's well-being instead of selling our house to pay medical bills."

These are just two of the families that President Obama is fighting for. Help Barack Obama keep fighting to ensure that every New Mexican family is entitled to affordable healthcare, no matter what. Get involved: barackobama.com/gotv
