My time working as a Summer Fellow with Obama for America has been life-changing.
I’m a resident of Naperville, Illinois and future Michigan Wolverine majoring in Political Science and Women’s Studies. I am the organizing fellow for Illinois Region 3.
So far, I have travelled to three battleground states, had over 40 1:1 meetings with inspiring supporters from across Naperville, Aurora, Woodridge, and Lisle and learned more about the world in this short time than I ever have before.
The most rewarding aspect of the fellowship is the experience talking to people through canvassing and phone banking. These encounters have taught me to build relationships with people. The stories they share with me motivate me every day to fight harder to get our president re-elected.
I will never forget that during a meet and greet, my neighborhood team leader and I met a Navy SEAL who wanted to do more for the president than just vote for him. He related his experience meeting the president and Mrs. Obama while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan. In his words, the president was a man like no other—his genuineness and charisma left impressions on all of the soldiers in his platoon. His words were so powerful it reminded me while the work I do may at times seem repetitive, small acts by one individual can help an entire country.
I will be sad to leave the world of organizing for Obama but this fellowship has given me all the tools that I will need to persuade people, organize communities, and put action behind my words. I would recommend to anyone who is passionate, hardworking, and craving a challenging and stimulating job to apply to become an organizing fellow. Fired Up and Ready to Go!
