Recently, a group of Iowa Latinos gathered in Perry for a Latinos for Obama house party. This house party was hosted by Eddie Diaz, a member of the Latinos for Obama Lideres Council, a teacher, a former City Council member, and a community leader.
Attendees discussed the President's accomplishments, including:
- President Obama is Committed to Working With Congress to Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform and has Always Supported the DREAM Act.
- The deferred action policy for childhood arrivals: application forms are now accepted, as of August 15, 2012. Certain people who came to the United States as children and meet other key guidelines may request, on a case-by-case basis, consideration of deferred action.
- Health care: President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act, ensuring that nine million currently uninsured Latino Americans will have access to quality, affordable health insurance.
- Education: President Obama doubled funding for Pell Grants, putting the cost of a college education within reach for an additional 150,000 Latino students and their families.
Juan Corona, the local Field Organizer, was thrilled to see the exceptional turnout.
"It was exciting to see how energized everyone was about the event and the President's re-election campaign."
