Deanna loves to travel, see new things, try new places and meet new people. In fact, she moved away from home when she was 16 to attend an international school in Italy called the United World College of the Adriatic. That’s where she developed a passion for politics. Since then, she has traveled to 14 different countries. She came to St. Louis last August with Teach for America and is currently teaching high school Spanish.
“Every day in my classroom I try to teach my students that if they believe in something, they need to go out and fight for it. Individuals have the power to change everything. This summer I wanted to personify that lesson by getting out and supporting President Obama. As a teacher at a public charter school in downtown St. Louis, I see the human impact of educational inequality and poverty every day. These issues aren't just about the numbers to me, they are names and faces and stories. They are my students. It is because of them and their equivalents around this country and across the world that I am supporting President Obama and why I identify with his mission to build ‘a nation where everyone gets a fair shot, does their fair share and plays by the same set of rules.’ ”
Spend a little time with Deanna, or any of this summer’s organizing fellows, and you will find a contagious enthusiasm for the President and his re-election campaign.
Join Deanna and the rest of the OFA-Missouri Team as we work toward victory in November.
