During the week of April 27, 2011, certain areas in Birmingham and Jefferson County were hit by twisters. As a result of the devastation, many lost their homes, livelihoods, and even their lives. The Bessemer campaign team tried in their own way to extend a hand in restoring any semblance of normalcy for the residents of Pratt City area. This area has not received as much media attention during the early stages of cleanup, but rest assured efforts are in full swing now.
We loaded up at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday Morning and headed to Scott School which served as the resource center for the area. Our efforts included identifying the needs of the citizens, and disbursement of basic necessities for daily living. Some even brought their own tools and assisted in tree and debris removal from properties.
We knew the extent of the storm, but nothing could prepare one for the shock of seeing straight through someone's home. It is as if time for half their homes was caught in a capsule, untouched- with pictures, TVs, and mirrors on the walls untouched, yet the other half of the same homes were gone completely. The work was long and hard, rewarding in a peculiar way, and yet felt miniscule in the scheme of things. But in this case the old adage "Each One, Reach One" is applicable, and it looks like we'll be reaching for quite some time to come to restore hope to the area.
