Wisconsin Knows: The Romney-Ryan Plan for Medicare

Susan has been a Neighborhood Team Leader in Elkhorn since 2008, largely because of President Obama's commitment to affordable healthcare. She is fortunate enough to have Medicare thanks in part to the Affordable Care Act and knows the value of having accessible health care to get the medications and services she needs.

The Romney-Ryan budget threatens to take away the very thing that Susan, and millions of other Americans depend on every day. Romney has selected a candidate who proposes budget-busting policies that hurt seniors and the middle class – like ending Medicare as we know it and raising taxes on millions of middle-class Americans to pay tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

When Susan looks at the difference between the two candidates it couldn’t be more clear. The Affordable Care Act protects and strengthens Medicare. 930,000 Wisconsin seniors now benefit from a stronger Medicare program. The solvency of the program has been extended by eight years, and new prescription drug discounts have saved 59,000 Wisconsin seniors an average of $640.

Ryan’s budget would end Medicare as we know it and turn it into a voucher program that would increase seniors’ health cost by $6,350 a year. The desire to repeal Obamacare and his budget for our future puts many in a difficult position when it comes to being able to afford the insurance or the medication they need.
