An Unfading Hub for Community Involvement

By Josh on

In the resurging neighborhood of Milwaukee called Walnut Hill, Amaranth Bakery is a quaint café offering healthy fare, a quick latte and a great space to gather with friends. But it’s also a great place to organize a canvass.

Owners Stephanie and David opened their doors to Obama volunteers to serve as a local hub for Own Your Vote efforts. It’s a busy place on Days of Action when volunteers meet up for their team’s canvass kick off and get the resources they need to make a difference in their community.

Stephanie says she offers her business as a launching point for these efforts "in the spirit of inclusiveness and connecting with others. It’s with a similar spirit that Obama is moving our country forward.”

It was in this spirit that Stephanie met her husband and co-owner David – they were both community organizers. “A huge part of why we committed to opening this business is that outside of non-profits and community centers, there are few places to hold meetings around organizing,” says David. “After work hours, such conversations still need to happen.”

As hosts for local fundraisers and community building projects, Stephanie and David have made Amaranth a cornerstone of their neighborhood. And as the Walnut Hill community continues to blossom, Stephanie and David’s café will remain a catalyst for canvassing efforts – providing an opportunity for anyone to get more involved in their community.
