The cost of repealing Obamacare for women

Mitt Romney and his fellow Republicans have been calling to repeal Obamacare for months.

What Romney ignores is what a repeal would mean for the health care of millions of women across the country. The consequences of repealing Obamacare’s hard-fought gains would be a huge setback for millions of women who rely on many of the law’s provisions. Here’s what women stand to lose if Romney gets his way:

  • Coverage for preventive care and screenings: Under Obamacare, insurance companies are prohibited from charging a co-pay or deductible for a number of tests and screenings related to women’s health, such as mammograms, Pap smears, colon cancer screenings, and more.

  • Preventing discrimination based on pre-existing conditions: Starting in 2014, insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to someone on the basis of a pre-existing condition like breast cancer, asthma, or even pregnancy.

  • Protecting women from discrimination: Insurance companies will no longer be permitted to charge women higher fees or premiums just for being a woman. Before the Affordable Care Act was enacted, some women were paying 50 percent more than men for the same insurance policy.

  • Extending coverage for young women: Young Americans can now remain on their parents’ health insurance plans until they turn 26, something Romney would reverse as president. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 1.1 million young women are already benefiting from this extension, and could lose their health insurance if Obamacare was repealed.

Romney’s repeal of Obamacare could erase these benefits for women, and leave millions without the security and access to health care coverage that health care reform is providing.
