Keeping his word: Moving towards energy independence

A year ago, President Obama outlined his all-of-the-above energy plan to reduce the need for foreign oil and make the U.S. a world leader in clean energy. Here’s a quick look at some of what has been accomplished:

  • Domestic oil and natural gas production have increased every year under the Obama administration. The country’s reliance on foreign oil hit a 16-year low in 2011.

  • The President put in place the first-ever fuel economy standards for heavy-duty trucks and proposed the strictest fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles in U.S. history. Over time, these new standards will save American drivers more than $8,000 per vehicle and reduce the country’s oil consumption by more than 2 million barrels a day.

  • The administration has upgraded the energy efficiency of more than one million homes across the country, which will save many families over $400 on heating and cooling bills in the first year alone.

  • President Obama has achieved his goal of breaking ground on at least four commercial scale alternative fuel refineries—a year ahead of schedule. These projects will produce a total of nearly 100 million gallons of advanced biofuels a year.

While we’ve made progress, there’s more to do—and the President is committed to pursuing a comprehensive energy plan.
