  • Faces of the campaign: Evelyn

    By Alex Woodward on

A classical pianist by training, Evelyn was never political until 2008. After being frustrated by politics in the past, she decided that it was no longer enough to get angry—she had to do something.

Evelyn volunteered for the President in ’08, and continues to organize weekly phone banks at the campaign’s headquarters and helps register voters across the city. She spends Saturday mornings in Union Square with fellow Obama supporters, giving out information, talking with voters, and asking folks to get involved.

Want to join Evelyn and other volunteers like her for an upcoming event in New York City? Check out events here and RSVP to get involved.

  • Introducing the Vice President—and organizing—at NYU

    By Sara Moe on

Last week I had the opportunity to introduce Vice President Biden before his speech at my school, New York University. I never thought that I’d have the chance to do something as exciting (and nerve-wracking) as this.

I began volunteering with Organizing for America as a summer organizer last year in my home state of New Hampshire. I worked with volunteers in my community and began building the neighborhood teams that are the heart of this grassroots campaign. When I returned to school in New York, I got connected with the campaign office here and began organizing a team of students at NYU. Working together, we built a team of motivated volunteers, and have made thousands of phone calls, registered hundreds of new voters, and taken several trips to the important battleground state of Pennsylvania.

I was proud to talk about my organizing to the audience at Vice President’s NYU speech last week, hoping it would energize some of the crowd to get involved in this campaign. I was even prouder to tell the Vice President about what we’ve done on campus to help him and President Obama win in November. From making college more affordable to health care and equal pay for women, this election matters to students and young people across the country.

Today, May 1st, our campaign across the country is launching Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) for Obama.

Here in New York, AAPI volunteers and supporters are hard at work getting organized leading up to this November. At a recent Camp Obama training in Manhattan, AAPI folks from around the city came together to learn organizing skills and get involved with Obama 2012. After hearing from New York Field Director Kate Doehring, participants spoke with a special guest, actor Kal Penn, who talked about why he supports President Obama and why he's working hard to make sure the President has four more years to keep making progress.
