STATEMENT: Romney's Release of Additional Tax Returns Could Clear Up Important Questions

CHICAGO, IL – Obama for America Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter issued the following statement today in reaction to the Romney Campaign’s carefully worded defense of Mitt Romney's offshore investments:

“Earlier today, Kevin Madden, a senior advisor to Governor Romney, released a carefully worded statement that said Mitt Romney has not received any tax advantages from operating a corporation in Bermuda, holding investments in the Cayman Islands or opening a Swiss bank account.   It's not clear whether Mr. Madden is saying that he never received tax advantages, or that he's not currently receiving them.  Regardless, he's asking voters to take him at his word, since Mitt Romney is defying the long-time precedent of presidential nominees releasing multiple years of tax returns.   But, if he didn't receive any tax advantage, what was the purpose of creating shell corporations and investing so much of his money in tax havens in the first place?  And, why did he work so hard to keep the existence of these accounts secret for so many years?   These issues are important because voters can't make judgments about Mitt Romney's motivations on critical policy matters if this information is kept hidden.   If there's nothing to hide, why not clear it all up and release multiple years of returns like every candidate has done for decades, including Mitt Romney's own father?”
