Not closing our eyes

By Jennifer Austin, Pennsylvania Press Secretary on

Mitt Romney and his allies like Governor Tom Corbett just don’t get it. It's extreme policies like Governor Corbett’s that have left Romney and Republicans underwater with women. Tom Corbett is still standing by his support for legislation that mandates that a woman seeking an abortion must submit to an unnecessary medical procedure that has nothing to do with her health. Corbett continues to indicate to women that they can’t be trusted to make their own decisions—dismissing their concerns by insisting that this unnecessary procedure is ‘not invasive at all’ and that they can just ‘close their eyes.’

While Governor Corbett is trying to pass legislation to limit women’s rights, Romney is ‘extraordinarily proud’ of his endorsement and is campaigning on a platform that would be damaging to Pennsylvania women. Mitt Romney supports the Blunt-Rubio Amendment that would hand women’s health decisions over to their bosses; thinks that Roe v. Wade should be overturned; wants to ‘get rid of’ Planned Parenthood, a vital health care provider for millions of women; and refuses to say whether he would have signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. There is no question Romney and his allies like Tom Corbett are working to turn back the clock on issues important to women.

President Obama has made clear that his administration won’t close their eyes to these types of assaults on women’s rights. Throughout his life, the President has been a staunch advocate for women, protecting and advancing policies that promote fairness, equal opportunity, and a level playing field. The President knows that women’s issues are America’s issues and he will always be a strong advocate for women.
