Around here, we don’t just say the campaign motto- Respect. Empower. Include. Win- we live it, we breathe it, and we mean it. Jacintha B., one of our summer organizing fellows, felt like our Women for Obama event held on Monday night perfectly represented these beliefs:

“It was really nice to see such a diversity of women, especially in age! Everyone seemed enthusiastic to get involved, which was exciting.“

Women of all walks of life participated- young and older women, mothers, daughters, wives, college students, African American women, Latino women, Jewish women, and LGBT women. State Senator Constance Johnson lead the dozens of women in attendance through a discussion of the issues, covering everything from access to healthcare to equal pay to zero tolerance for violence against women. This discussion sparked another conversation after the event.

A young professional from Norman, Mackenzie L., stayed up late with her friends talking about conservative anti-woman policies. “We grew up as a generation who only ever knew a Republican as president. And throughout it all, we never questioned that one day there would eventually be someone better.”

She believes that someone is President Obama.

“We don’t just want for Obama to win; we need for Obama to win, like we’ve never needing anything before.”

Mackenzie is right- we do need for President Obama to win. Women fought to get him elected in 2008 and we will fight to get him re-elected on November 6th.

The first step? Reaching out to your friends and family about the importance of this election. Sign up to host a “Women for Obama” house party to get the conversation started.

At the end of April we opened our headquarters in Oklahoma City. Former Attorney General Drew Edmondson spoke to a standing room only crowd about the importance of OFA in a state like Oklahoma:

"You don't do any missionary work in a churchyard."

  • Faces of Change: Dakota’s Pell grant

    By Shayna D. on

Like many young Oklahomans, Dakota Remy hoped to attend college but was afraid he couldn't-- simply because his parents could not afford to send him. He knew how hard it was for his parents without degrees.

His teacher, Donna Landon, encouraged him to pursue his dreams and helped him find a way to pay for his education. After applying for FAFSA, Dakota found out he qualified for a $5,500 Pell grant.

By expanding the Pell grant program, President Obama has kept his promise to make college more affordable for students from working and middle class families. 3 million more hardworking students received Pell grants since 2008, helping them get the education they need to compete for the jobs of the future.

    Dakota appreciates this change:

"It's inspiring to know that President Obama looks at education as an investment in the future. He wants everyone to be successful and that make me want to go help someone else because someone's helping me."

A Claremore native, Dakota is now a freshman at Rogers State University. We look forward to what he will accomplish and do for others after he graduates!

  • Dakota’s Pell Grant

    By Laura Wilson on

“My parents have always wanted me to go to college, because they knew how hard it was to live without a college degree. But when they found out how much it would cost, they just couldn’t afford it. There was no way.”

Dakota knew that he needed a college degree to pursue his dreams to work with computers or go into politics. But he didn’t know how he could get there—until one of his teachers helped him fill out his application for a federal Pell Grant.

Watch Dakota’s story to see why President Obama’s expansion of the Pell Grant program has made such a difference for students like him.
