  • Wooster is ready to win

    By Salim on

Neighborhood teams across Ohio are fired up following President Obama’s rally in Columbus on May 5th, and Wooster is no different.

Neighborhood Team Leader Gabby reports back:

“Since we went to Columbus last Saturday to see the President we’re fired up and ready to go! We have more people volunteering, wanting to get more involved. The outpouring of support because of the rally has been really amazing.”

And Gabby loved what President Obama had to say in Columbus:

“He touched on a lot of issues that hit home here; we’re a small town that’s been through tough times, but he’s given us a lot of hope by rescuing the auto industry in Ohio. We are ready to back him, and people are crossing over.”

Gabby went from supporter to a neighborhood team leader just two months ago.

After signing up to volunteer on barackobama.com, Gabby received a call from Wooster Field Organizer Andrew Olenick. Since then, she’s been volunteering 15 to 20 hours a week, building her team, coaching her volunteers, and hosting events to bring in new supporters.

Still coasting off the excitement of the rally, Gabby’s team has their full attention on Wednesday, May 16th—they’re officially opening the Wooster office at 6pm.

“Wednesday is a great time for the community to come in and see what we’ve been up to. We’ve got computers and phones ready to go and we’re building up our volunteer teams. We phonebank twice a week and we’re canvassing on Saturday and Sunday. We’re writing letters to the editor—we’re getting the community excited!”

For Gabby, the work is both fulfilling and fun.

“What I love about being a team leader is getting out and talking to people and working with other supporters—we have a united effort. Whether we’re canvassing or making phone calls, we have a lot of backers out there. It makes the job easy and rewarding.”

You can meet Gabby in Wooster on Wednesday night at the office opening, or get involved in your community today.

  • Moving forward in Mason, Ohio

    By Jasmine on

Last week, Mason Neighborhood Team Leader Sally made the drive with seven other volunteers to attend President Obama's first campaign rally held in Columbus, Ohio.

At the rally, President Obama made it clear that in order to move America forward, we’ll all need to step up our involvement:

"If you're willing to stick with me, fight with me, and press on with me...I guarantee you, we will move this country forward."

When President Obama asked folks in the crowd to get involved, volunteer leaders like Sally roared back with chants of “Yes We Can.”

"The fact that the First Lady and the President chose Ohio first was an honor—he's everything I think a President should be by the way he speaks and his principles," Sally said.

As the mother of a son with a pre-existing condition, Sally knows first-hand how important Obamacare is, and it’s why she volunteers her time to re-elect President Obama.

This week, the Mason team is preparing for their office opening on Tuesday night at 6:30pm. The office will serve as a home base for volunteers to convene and mobilize each week through November—ensuring that they keep the promise they made to President Obama at his rally—the promise to help move America forward.

"Enthusiasm is high. The office will put us on the map and help bring in more volunteers. It'll make sure that undecided voters hear our reason for believing that President Obama needs four more years to protect what he's started and to continue forward."

Let President Obama know that you stand with him too—join Sally at Mason’s office opening Tuesday night, or get involved with your neighborhood team by signing up to volunteer today.

  • Summer organizing in Ohio: the chance of a lifetime

By Christman Bowers, Regional Field Director for Stark & Summit Counties on

About a year ago, I made the best decision of my life: I applied to be a summer organizer to help re-elect President Obama.

I was a college student at the time, but knew that organizing for the President couldn’t wait. I put college on hold for an entirely different type of education.

Starting from scratch, I organized a handful of neighborhood teams in a Republican stronghold. These teams were then able to organize phone banks, canvasses, and house parties on their own because of my leadership. The work wasn’t easy, but it was always fulfilling. I formed lasting friendships and learned a ton about grassroots organizing and the issues that mattered most our supporters. These are just a few reasons why you should consider applying today.

I stuck around after the program ended to make sure my teams continued to thrive, and the campaign offered me a job—to become a Voting Rights Organizer in Ohio to help force a citizen’s referendum on House Bill 194, which could have unfairly shut many people out of the political process. After a successful summer and fall of organizing, I was promoted to a Regional Field Director. It’s been a remarkable journey—from volunteer to manager, my journey in the Buckeye State has changed my life forever.

I sometimes look back on my time as a summer organizer as a decisive moment in my life—the moment that I took fate into my own hands to make an impact on my nation’s future. Now it’s your turn. Apply to be a summer organizing fellow today, and get ready for the time of your life.
