Statement from Senator Barack Obama on Today's Decline in our GDP
in Chicago, IL
This morning, we learned that GDP has fallen for the first time this year, which means America is producing less and selling less and our economy is shrinking. American consumers were especially hard hit, experiencing their largest decline in spending in 28 years as wages failed to keep up with the rising cost of living. The decline in our GDP didn't happen by accident - it is a direct result of the Bush Administration's trickle down, Wall Street first, Main Street last policies that John McCain has embraced for the last eight years and plans to continue for the next four. These policies didn't work then, they won't work now, and I'm running for President to end them.

Statement from Senator Barack Obama on the Increase in Jobless Claims
in Chicago, IL
The news that more Americans filed for unemployment benefits this week and that unemployment claims remain near a seven-year high is another urgent reminder of how badly American workers need a change from the disastrous economic policies of the last eight years. While Washington has done nothing to extend unemployment benefits and create new jobs and John McCain has no jobs plan whatsoever,

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on Domestic Violence Awareness Month
in Chicago, IL
Today, I join all Americans in observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. At a time when one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, it's more important than ever that we dedicate ourselves to working on behalf of the thousands of women who suffer in silence.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on Breast Cancer Awareness Month
in Chicago, IL
Today, I'm proud to add my voice in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For me, the fight against cancer is deeply personal. My mother died of ovarian cancer in the prime of her life. And at a time when she should have been focused on getting well, she was lying in a hospital bed arguing with her insurance company because they refused to cover her treatment.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Treasury Departments' Plan
in Chicago, IL
The Treasury Department's concept of investing money directly into struggling banks so they can lend money to families and businesses is the right one. But we must make sure this plan is implemented in a way that helps homeowners and does not enrich Wall Street CEOs at the taxpayers' expense, something I have warned against from the first day of this financial crisis. Taxpayers who are now invested in Goldman Sachs should not be treated worse than when Warren Buffett invested in Goldman Sachs.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Financial Markets
in Chicago, IL
Today's developments in the market are a welcome sign that the global economic cooperation we saw this weekend - along with vigorous measures, including plans to recapitalize our financial institutions - are helping to restore confidence in our markets. But the tremendous volatility we are seeing in the market is a sign that we still face significant economic uncertainty. We have not yet solved the financial crisis, and we have barely even begun to solve the crisis facing middle-class families struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Agreement with North Korea
in Chicago, IL
North Korea's agreement to these verification measures is a modest step forward in dismantling its nuclear weapons programs. President Bush's decision to remove North Korea from the list of state sponsors of terrorism is an appropriate response, as long as there is a clear understanding that if North Korea fails to follow through there will be immediate consequences. It is now essential that North Korea halt all efforts to reassemble its nuclear facilities, place them back under IAEA supervision, and cooperate fully with the international community to complete the disablement of the Yongbyon facilities and to implement a robust verification mechanism to confirm the accuracy of its nuclear declaration.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama On The New Treasury Equity Initiative
in Chicago, IL
There are many causes of this economic crisis, and it's critical that we respond using all the tools that we currently have. That's why I support Secretary Paulson's latest initiative to use the authority we gave him in the financial rescue plan to provide more capital to our financial institutions so that they have money to lend to families and businesses.

Statement of Barack Obama on Stock Market Decline
in Chicago, IL
As millions of Americans lost more of their investments and hard-earned retirement savings today, it is critical that the Treasury Department move as quickly as possible to implement the rescue plan that passed Congress so that we can ease this credit crisis that's preventing businesses and consumers from getting loans and causing dangerous instability in our market.
October 3, 2008
Statement of Senator Barack Obama on September Jobs Report
in Chicago, IL
Today, Americans woke up to the sad news that 159,000 jobs were lost last month alone, making September the ninth straight month of job loss. With three-quarters of a million jobs lost this year, and millions of families struggling to pay the bills and stay in their homes, this country can't afford Senator McCain's plan to give America four more years of the same policies that have devastated our middle-class and our economy for the last eight.

Statement of Senator Obama on Moving Financial Legislation Forward
in Chicago, IL
Yesterday, within the course of a few hours, the failure to pass the economic rescue plan in Washington led to the single largest decline of the stock market in two decades. "While I, like others, am outraged that the reign of irresponsibility on Wall Street and in Washington has created the current crisis, I also know that continued inaction in the face of the gathering storm in our financial markets would be catastrophic for our economy and our families.

Obama Statement on Financial Plan Breakthrough
in Chicago, IL
The breakthrough between Congress and the Administration is the culmination of a sorry period in our history, in which reckless speculation and greed on Wall Street and lax oversight from Washington led to a meltdown of our financial markets. But regardless of how we got here, a failure to deal with the current crisis would have devastating consequences for our economy, costing millions of Americans their jobs and retirement security.
September 25, 2008
Statement from Senator Barack Obama on Washington Mutual
in Chicago, IL
The government-brokered sale of Washington Mutual is the latest sign of the perilous situation facing our financial system and our economy. Although Americans with deposits at Washington Mutual should rest assured that they are safe under this arrangement, the failures of our financial institutions threaten economic instability, jobs, and the incomes of American families.

Joint Statement of Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain
in Chicago, IL
The American people are facing a moment of economic crisis. No matter how this began, we all have a responsibility to work through it and restore confidence in our economy. The jobs, savings, and prosperity of the American people are at stake. "Now is a time to come together - Democrats and Republicans - in a spirit of cooperation for the sake of the American people. The plan that has been submitted to Congress by the Bush Administration is flawed, but the effort to protect the American economy must not fail.

Obama-Biden Campaign Statement on the Rising Costs of Health Care
in Chicago, IL
This morning's Kaiser Family Foundation report shows that premiums have risen 5 percent over the past year - more than doubling since George W. Bush took office - bringing the cost that an average family pays for a health care plan to $12,680. With so many Americans struggling to pay their medical bills, we can't afford the McCain plan that would make you pay taxes on your heath care for the first time, offers a tax credit of less than half the value of average family health insurance plans, and gives insurance companies an even freer hand over what they charge, who they cover, and what they'll cover.

Statement from Senator Barack Obama on President Ahmadinejad's Remarks
in Chicago, IL
I strongly condemn President Ahmadinejad's outrageous remarks at the United Nations, and am disappointed that he had a platform to air his hateful and anti-Semitic views. The threat from Iran's nuclear program is grave. Now is the time for Americans to unite on behalf of the strong sanctions that are needed to increase pressure on the Iranian regime.
September 21, 2008
A Statement of Principles for the Treasury Proposal from Senator Barack Obama
in Chicago, IL
The era of greed and irresponsibility on Wall Street and in Washington has led to a financial crisis as profound as any we have faced since the Great Depression. But regardless of how we got here, the circumstances we face require decisive action because the jobs, savings, and economic security of millions of Americans are now at risk.

Statement by Senator Barack Obama on Armenian Independence Day
in Chicago, IL
On this day, September 21, Armenians and friends of Armenia everywhere celebrate the independence of the Republic of Armenia, and I extend my warmest and best wishes on this happy occasion. Throughout their long history, a spirit of independence, self-reliance, and survival defines the Armenian people. After centuries of living in the Persian, Russian, and Turkish empires, Armenians first achieved their modern independence in 1918 and regained it after 70 years of Soviet rule in 1991. Their struggle continues, but in the years of renewed independence they have been able to guide their own destiny through years of war and economic dislocation. Even in the face of genocide, the pain of the past has not defeated the Armenians, either in Armenia or the far-flung diaspora.

Statement of Sen. Obama on the Terrorist Attack in Pakistan
in Chicago, IL
I strongly condemn the tragic terrorist attack in Pakistan, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Today's attack demonstrates the grave and urgent threat that al Qaeda and its affiliates pose to the United States, to Pakistan, and to the security of all nations. As the attack earlier this week on our embassy in Yemen shows, over seven years after 9/11, the terrorist threat knows no borders, and the terrorists threaten innocent civilians of all religions and regions. Now is the time to refocus our efforts on defeating al Qaeda and securing the American people.

It's a time to honor the achievements and sacrifices of Hispanic Americans, from their long and proud tradition of military service to the visionary leadership of César Chavez to today's ongoing struggles for opportunity and prosperity. It's a time to recognize all Hispanic Americans who have helped write the social, economic, and cultural story of America."

Statement from Senator Obama commending federal regulators on blocking golden parachutes for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac CEOs
in Chicago, IL
"I want to commend federal regulators for blocking golden parachutes for the outgoing CEOs of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Last week, while John McCain praised the plan to rescue Fannie and Freddie without raising any concerns about a golden parachute for their CEOs, I urged Secretary Paulson and Director Lockhart to reject these multimillion dollar bonuses. Rewarding CEOs during a historic economic crisis may make sense to someone who's so disturbingly out of touch he believes 'the fundamentals of our economy are strong,' but it undermines our economy and betrays our sense of fairness.

Senator Barack Obama's Statement on New Delhi Bombings
in Chicago, IL
I deplore and condemn the vicious attacks perpetrated in New Delhi this weekend, which left 21 innocent people dead and nearly 100 wounded. These cowardly acts of mass murder are a stark reminder that India continues to suffer from the scourge of terrorism on a scale few other nations can imagine.

Statement from Senator Barack Obama on the Situation in Financial Markets
in Chicago, IL
Below is a statement from Senator Barack Obama on the Situation in Financial Markets: "This morning we woke up to some very serious and troubling news from Wall Street. "The situation with Lehman Brothers and other financial institutions is the latest in a wave of crises that are generating enormous uncertainty about the future of our financial markets. This turmoil is a major threat to our economy and its ability to create good-paying jobs and help working Americans pay their bills, save for their future, and make their mortgage payments..."

Senator Barack Obama's Statement on Serbia's Ratification of a Stabilization and Association Agreement
in Chicago, IL
This week's ratification by the Serbian parliament of a Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union is an important step in Serbia's integration into the Euro-Atlantic community, further contributing to the prospect of stability and prosperity in the Balkans. The new government of President Tadic and Prime Minister Cvetkovic has again demonstrated the emphasis it puts on consolidating democracy in Serbia and developing the country's integration with Europe. A democratic Serbia that lives in peace with its neighbors, respects the rights of all its citizens, and defends the rule of law deserves the full support of Europe and the United States.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks
in Chicago, IL
Today, we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and grieve with the families and friends who lost someone they loved in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will never forget those who died. We will always remember the extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, police and emergency responders, and those who sacrificed their own lives on Flight 93 to protect their fellow Americans. And we give thanks for the Americans defending us every day in our communities at home, and in our military abroad.

Statement from Senator Obama on the New Deficit Numbers
in Chicago, IL
Today, we learned that Washington has run up a record budget deficit of $407 billion this year, more than $1 trillion worse than the budget surplus President Bush promised for 2008 in his first budget. John McCain wants us to think he represents change, but he wants to spend $3.4 trillion more than President Bush on tax cuts, most of which will go to the wealthiest corporations and big oil companies and leave more than 100 million middle-class families without a dime of tax relief.

Barack Obama Statement on the Need for Humanitarian Assistance to Haiti Following Devastating Hurricane and Storms
in Chicago, IL
My thoughts and prayers are with the hundreds of thousands of Haitians struggling to survive the floods and devastation caused by the hurricanes and tropical storms of the past six weeks, and I extend my deepest sympathies to those affected by the loss of more than 500 lives. Time is of the essence in helping Haiti cope with this humanitarian crisis and begin to recover. Tens of thousands of Haitians have been displaced and left without shelter, Haiti's already struggling agricultural sector has been devastated – and hurricane season is not yet over.

in Chicago, IL
I congratulate Asif Ali Zardari on his election as President of Pakistan. I am also glad to hear of the restoration of several deposed judges, an important step towards the restoration of a truly independent judiciary.

Statement from Senator Obama on August Jobs Report
in Chicago, IL
Today's jobs report is a reminder of what's at stake in this election - John McCain showed last night that he is intent on continuing the economic policies that just this year have caused the American economy to lose 605,000 jobs. John McCain may believe that the fundamentals of our economy are 'strong,' but the working men and women I meet every day are working harder for less, the typical working age family's income is down $2,000 since George Bush took office, and their purchasing power is as low as it's been in a decade. John McCain's answer is more of the same...

I welcome the Bush Administration's announcement of $1 billion in humanitarian and economic assistance to Georgia, a step that Joe Biden and I have been advocating for weeks. Statement by Senator Obama on EU Emergency Summit Meeting
in Chicago, IL
I welcome the results of today's emergency summit of European Union leaders in Brussels. The EU made clear, as I have repeatedly insisted, that Georgia's territorial integrity must be respected, that Russia's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states must be rejected, that the six-point peace plan of August 12 must be implemented in its entirety, and that Georgia must be given substantial humanitarian and economic assistance.

Statement from Senator Obama on Russia's Decision to Recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as Independent States
in Chicago, IL
"I condemn Russia's decision to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states and call upon all countries of the world not to accord any legitimacy to this action. "The United States should call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to condemn Russia's decision in coordination with our European allies. The U.S. should lead within the UN and other international forums to cast a clear and unrelenting light on the decision, and to further isolate Russia internationally because of its actions. The OSCE must also send a serious monitoring group to Georgia."

Statement from Senator Obama on the Census Income, Health Insurance and Poverty Numbers
in Chicago, IL
Today's news confirms what America's struggling families already know - that over the past seven years our economy has moved backwards. Statement of Senator Barack Obama on Reports that the U.S. and Iraq Have Reached a Tentative Agreement on Troop Withdrawal from Iraq
in Chicago, IL
I am glad that the Administration has finally shifted to accepting a timetable for the removal of our combat troops from Iraq. Success in Iraq depends on an Iraqi government that is reconciling its differences and taking responsibility for its future, and a timetable is the best way to press the Iraqis to do just that. I welcome the growing convergence around this pragmatic and responsible position.

Campaign-appointed debate negotiators House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said they were pleased to have reached an early agreement to provide the American people with the opportunity to see and hear the candidates debate the critical issues facing the country. The two campaigns have accepted sponsorship of the debates by the Commission on Presidential Debates, subject to the debates being conducted under the terms of their agreement.

The report, "Losing Ground: How the Loss of Adequate Health Insurance Is Burdening Working Families," by the Commonwealth Fund, also showed that 41 percent of people with incomes from $20,000 to $40,000 went without health insurance in 2007, up from 28 percent in 2001.

Statement from Senator Obama on President Musharraf's announcement that he will resign from office immediately
in Chicago, IL
President Musharraf has made the right decision to step down as President of Pakistan. It is in the interests of his country and the Pakistani people to end the political crisis that has immobilized the coalition government for too long. I have long said that the central terrorist threat to the United States lies in northwest Pakistan and Afghanistan, and not Iraq. US policy must focus on assuring that all elements of Pakistan's government are resolute in shutting down the safe havens for al Qaeda and the Taliban. There can be no safehaven for terrorists who threaten the American people.

Obama Campaign Statement on the New Trade Deficit Numbers
in Chicago, IL
While Senator McCain may believe that the small reduction in the trade deficit represents great progress in an economy he thinks is doing just fine, Barack Obama believes that America can do better than a $693 billion trade deficit over the last year. We cannot afford another four years of the massive trade deficits we've had under President Bush - trade deficits that Senator McCain's economic policies would only make worse.

Good morning. The situation in Georgia continues to deteriorate because of the escalation of Russia's use of military force. I have spoken to President Saakashvili, and conveyed my deep regret over the loss of life, and the suffering of the people of Georgia. For many months, I have warned that there needs to be active international engagement to peacefully address the disputes over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, including a high-level and neutral international mediator, and a genuine international peacekeeping force - not simply Russian troops.

Over the last several weeks, Russia and Georgia have been engaged in a steadily more dangerous confrontation over two secessionist regions of Georgia -- South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Although these territories are located within Georgia's internationally-recognized borders, the Russian government seems determined to challenge Georgia's territorial integrity in both places. Developments took an especially provocative turn several days ago when four Russian warplanes violated Georgian airspace close to the Georgian capital for forty minutes.

Remarks of Senator Barack Obama: Credit Cards Event
in Chicago, IL
Before we begin, I just wanted to say a word about the flooding devastating so many communities. We were scheduled to be holding this event in Iowa, but we decided to cancel it because we didn't want to divert state resources from going to help with flood relief. My heart goes out to the families in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and across the Midwest, who have been forced to flee their own homes, and leave their businesses and communities behind. Right now, many of them are wondering when they'll be able to return, and what they'll find when they get there. Well, we cannot assure them that their communities will be rebuilt overnight, but we can assure them that they will be rebuilt – because we'll work to ensure that the full resources of our state and federal government are there to help. And I will do everything in my power to see to it that those resources get to the people who need them as swiftly as possible.
