• Wisconsin seniors stand against the Romney-Ryan plan for Medicare

Since its inception in 1965, millions of seniors have been lifted out of poverty, precisely because of Medicare. Today, tens of millions of seniors rely on it, including 900,000 right here in Wisconsin.

Crippling Medicare by turning it into a voucher program of diminishing value will have real and immediate effects not just on seniors, but also will introduce new burdens on those working families - many who also help take care of their parents and grandparents.

Today in Racine, Wisconsin State Representative Cory Mason talked about the importance of Medicare. In the 1st Congressional District, Paul Ryan’s plan would have some other terrible effects based on research from the House of Representatives:

    • The Romney-Ryan Plan would increase prescription drug costs for 9,700 Medicare beneficiaries who enter the so-called Part D donut hole.
    • The Romney-Ryan Plan would eliminate new preventive care benefits for 112,000 Medicare beneficiaries in this District.
    • The Romney-Ryan Plan would increase the out-of-pocket costs of health coverage by more than $6,000 per year in 2022 and by almost $12,000 per year by 2032 for the 137,000 in the District who are between the ages of 44 and 54.
    • And finally, the Romney-Ryan Plan would deny 550,000 individuals aged 54 and younger access to Medicare’s guaranteed benefits.

We stand with seniors against Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s dangerous agenda, but it’s clear that its damage will reach far beyond our senior population. American cannot afford the policies of the Romney-Ryan ticket.
