• Howard: My way of giving back

Howard Howard is a neighborhood team leader in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Howard, a Vietnam Marine Corps veteran, works hard for Democratic candidates on the local and national level. Asked why he volunteers his time as a neighborhood team leader (NTL) for the Obama campaign, Howard Johnson replied, “I am as patriotic as I can be for my country. This is my way of giving back.”

Howard believes in the successes under President Obama: capturing bin Laden, passing the Affordable Care Act, reviving the auto industry, and passing the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which included tax breaks for working people and paid for school teachers, police, and fire fighters. “And don’t forget,” Howard added, “President Obama has placed two women on the Supreme Court, helped women with their health needs, and promoted equal pay for equal work.”

But most of all, Howard loves that President and Mrs. Obama are “community people—one of us, not elite, but one of us.” He continues, saying that President Obama never seems rattled, he listens and understands the concerns of everyday Americans.

So how does Howard’s patriotism show up in his work? He spends his days recruiting people for his precinct, assigning them to tasks, whether it be data entry, phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, or voter registration. He makes those same calls and visits. That patriotism can be summed up in one word: commitment.

On a recent Saturday, a team of volunteers joined Howard for door-to-door canvassing. When the team headed home, Howard went back out by himself and knocked on fifty more doors.

“President Obama does what’s best for our country.” And so does Howard.
