• Team Virginia Welcomes New DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz

Just hours before she was elected as Chair of the Democratic National Committee, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined volunteers at a phone bank in Arlington to share her thoughts on the power of grassroots organizing and sat down to help make a few phone calls to Virginians herself. The dozens of attendees at the morning event ranged from new volunteers and summer organizers, to veteran volunteers and community leaders – and each left inspired by the Congresswoman and excited about the 2012 campaign.

“As a former constituent of Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz's, I can't say enough good things about her. Not only is she intelligent and well-spoken, but she really inspires as well. At the phone canvass event in Arlington she spoke about her first run for the Florida Legislature. That anecdote was perfect. It demonstrated not only her own drive for success, but also the importance of running a grassroots campaign and speaking to as many people as possible – personally.

"It brought to the forefront the power of human interaction. The Congresswoman’s story reminded us that politics is more than media advertisements and corporate sponsorship, it's about showing that someone is listening to the public, starting a discussion, inviting people to take part in their own governance by getting involved in the election process. That's what we're trying to do. The President can't personally speak to every person in America, but as a team, we can help him continue the conversation he started in 2008. I thank the Congresswoman for her inspirational words today.”

    – Chip - Summer Organizer, Alexandria

“Virginia is going to be a battleground state in 2012, so it is especially exciting privilege to have a brilliant fighter like Debbie launch her tenure as DNC chair here.”

    – Mike Signer - small business owner and Virginia Democratic activist, Arlington

"Today filled with me energy and hope. Everyone I spoke to on the phone was very positive and several of them thanked me. This is going to be a very long and hard battle but I know that I will be able to make a difference."

    – Marilyn – Neighborhood Team Leader, Prince William County

“This is a very exciting time. We’re rebuilding the coalition that made 2008 possible – reaching out to new supporters and reconnecting with old campaign friends alike, getting their feedback on how they want to build a campaign for victory in 2012.”

    – Delegate Bob Brink (D - Arlington)

"My team was really excited to participate in this kick-off with the new chair of the DNC. We had folks drive out from every part Northern Virginia to make calls alongside Congresswoman Wasserman for the 'I’m in' campaign. Many volunteers were especially excited to see a woman leading our party, and someone who believes so deeply in grassroots organizing.”

    Karima – Community Organizer, Vienna

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz closed her remarks to the group by recalling the conversation she had with the President when he first asked her to step into the role of DNC Chair. She told him “Mr. President, I will work like hell to get you across the finish line. You can count on me.” Team Virginia congratulates the Congresswoman on being elected Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and we could not be more excited and proud to fight alongside her to get President Obama over that finish line.
