Meet Jamie C., a member of the 2011 class of Summer Organizers in New York City. Jamie, a recent graduate of Michigan State University, will be spending her summer building for 2012 in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn. While fully dedicated to this campaign, Jamie was not always a Democrat.
She grew up in East Northport, N.Y. with two parents who were Democrats, but she did not simply adopt her parents’ political views. After hearing then-Senator Barack Obama’s 2004 convention speech, however, Jamie began to rethink her political position.
At college, she realized that she believed more in policies laid out by the Democratic Party and by then-Senator Obama and began to support his campaign for the Presidency. She came close to shaking President Obama’s hand during a visit to Michigan State University, where he was honored with a Michigan State basketball jersey with his name on it.
As she anticipated coming home to New York this summer, she decided to apply for the Summer Organizer program because of her desire to keep her community informed about President Obama’s accomplishments. Her goal this summer? “To increase participation in the political process by getting people motivated!”
