With great anticipation, team leaders and state leadership welcomed the 2011 class of summer organizers to a weekend full of training. The training started off with an overview of the history of organizing, influential organizers, and inspiring video clips of now President Obama’s speeches. Summer organizers and team leaders alike were energized by the great program.

"You need vision to win the future!!!"

    — Eileen V, a Shreveport team leader, said after watching President Obama's speeches.

Baton Rouge team leader, Sarah G., and state director, Pat McCollough, leading a talk about organizing.

During this training, summer organizers learned the ropes by role-playing in different voter contact scenarios in breakout sessions. Below, summer organizers, Sharon and Twahna, practice sharing their personal stories in a one-on-one meeting. Through practice, they learn that effectively building a relationship involves developing a connection with prospective volunteers.

Summer organizers also heard from experienced community organizers including Mac from the Lower Ninth Ward, Tom C., a volunteer activist deeply involved in the ‘08 presidential election in Florida, in addition to local Democratic party leadership including Louisiana Rep. Wesley Bishop and Orleans Parish Democratic party chair, James Gray.
