• "Not just yes, heck yes!"

    Sarah on the phone

At our training this past weekend, the Iowa summer organizers were told that a phone is an organizer’s best friend. After my first week in the field, I definitely agree.

This week, I logged over 15 phone hours, calling supporters to introduce myself and connecting with former volunteers.

Making my first call was nerve-wracking. Although I volunteered with the Obama campaign in 2008, I had never made a political phone call. Sitting in the Des Moines OFA office with other summer organizers who seemed to be having success on the phones, I took a deep breath and made my first call.

A man answered, and I introduced myself and explained why I was calling. When I asked him if we could still count on his support to help reelect President Obama in 2012, he said: “Not just yes, heck yes!”

I could not believe how enthusiastic he was. We chatted about the campaign and he asked, “What can I do to help?” His willingness to do whatever he could and his dedication to re-electing the President inspired me and kept me fired up as I called the rest of the folks on my list.

My phone continued to be a source of inspiration for the rest of the week, particularly on Wednesday’s summer organizer conference call. As well as hearing from National Field Director Jeremy Bird and having the chance to talk to other summer organizers across the country, we were joined by a very special guest: President Obama. The President asked if we were fired up. I, for one, have never been more ready to go!
