• In my eyes, Obamacare literally saved my life

I was able to stay on my parents insurance to get the care I needed.

I'm so thankful for being able to tell my story—I've cashed in all my karma chips and then some, and I work every day to earn more back. In my eyes, Obamacare literally saved my life.

In 2011, I knew something was wrong. And when my neck swelled to the size of my collarbone, I knew something was very, very wrong. Some doctors said it was allergies—like a reaction to pollen, or some other seasonal allergen—because of a horrible cough, but I knew it wasn't that. So when I visited an ear, nose, and throat doctor and they couldn't find anything wrong, they decided to scan for anything worse, just in case.

I'm glad they did. They caught the top of my tumor: It was non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The cough I had was the result of my lungs being strangled.

Now, I was 22 when I started going to doctor after doctor. In May 2011, I turned 23—the age that I would have had to go off my parents' health insurance plan. But luckily that was the year the Obamacare provision allowing children to stay on their parents' plan until 26 went into effect.

Two months after the provision went into effect, and one month after I would have aged off my parents' plan, I was diagnosed with cancer.

It was one-in-a-million type of luck. My father is also a cancer survivor, so I had access to a top-notch oncologist who cared for me around the clock while I was in the hospital for almost a month. I was able to receive that level of care because the Affordable Care Act gave me access to it.

Look, I'm very, very aware that if even one of the coin flips had gone wrong, I would be dead. That's not an exaggeration. I'm alive today because of my perseverance, the love and support of my family, and the care I received—thanks to Obamacare.

I'm in remission now. October was my two year anniversary. Right around then, my mother told me: "Some people are one-issue voters. Well, my issue is that my daughter wouldn't be alive without Obamacare. The President saved her life."
