• Making my own health decision saved my life

I’m living proof that a woman’s right to make her own health decisions should never be taken away.

When I was pregnant 23 years ago, I developed a small tear in the sac that held my baby. I was discharging fluid and my doctor told me if they didn’t induce labor, I would probably die.

The baby couldn’t survive either, because it was just 19 weeks old. My doctor and I decided the best and safest thing was for me to go through the birthing process right then. It was a live birth because the baby had a heartbeat. But we had a birth certificate and a death certificate within minutes of each other.

Many people would consider my choice an abortion — and if abortion were outlawed, the doctor would have had to let me die.

A year and a half later, my husband and I had a healthy daughter who is now getting ready to go to medical school. If I’d died, that would never have been possible.

The choice I made 23 years ago wasn’t easy, but it was between my doctor and me. The idea that anyone else could make these kinds of decisions for you is incomprehensible to me.

One of the many reasons I support President Obama is that he believes women should have the right to make their own health care decisions. If you feel the same way, commit to vote for Barack Obama today.
