I sat down with Nathaniel Harper, who was a summer fellow with us here at Obama for America - Kansas before moving on to be a field organizer in Iowa. Here is what he had to say about his experience:
What is your role with Obama for America?
I’m a summer organizing fellow and I’m in charge of making sure we contact potential voters so we can run an effective campaign. I train volunteers on how to use our system so we can make sure we stay in touch with everyone who wants to get involved and give them a voice in our grassroots campaign. The coolest part about my job is when it is done right you can constantly see the effect our volunteers are having in their neighborhoods. Watching our teams grow as people talk to their friends and neighbors about the importance of re-electing the President is really exciting.
Why did you decide to be a Summer Fellow?
I’m bisexual and when the president made his announcement of his support of same-sex marriage, I immediately went over to my computer and pulled up the application to be a fellow for the campaign and said to myself, "Let’s do this!"
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?
People often tell me they don’t have time, but do you have one free hour a week? You’d be surprised what you can do with just one hour a week. Plus, the people you will meet are great! It’s amazing to see all types of people coming together for a common purpose and something they really believe in.
Want to be an organizing fellow like Nate? Applications are available online to join our team. As we get closer to Election Day, it is the perfect time to get involved with Obama for America. But whether you can join us as a fellow, for a weekend of action in Iowa, or for an hour to make phone calls, we need your help to make the difference in this election. When we get to November 6th, will you have done everything you could to get President Obama re-elected?
