Minority Leader Pelosi filed a discharge petition to bring comprehensive immigration reform to a vote in the House.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took a step toward bringing comprehensive immigration reform to a vote in the House of Representatives by filing a discharge petition—a tactic that could bring an end to Congress's inaction. If 218 representatives sign the petition, immigration reform will finally receive a vote in the House, with or without Speaker Boehner's sign off.

President Obama applauded this effort to give comprehensive immigration reform the yes-or-no vote it deserves. This is a chance to do the right thing for our communities, our country and our economic future: Comprehensive immigration reform would create 121,000 new jobs each year for the next 10 years, add $832 billion to the country's GDP over the next 10 years and grow our small businesses—one in four of which have been started by immigrants in recent years.

But just because we're making steps forward, it doesn't mean that there aren't representatives who are trying to pull us back. Days ago, Representative Steve King said that undocumented immigrants who enlist in the military should be deported, stating:

"As soon as they raise their hand and say, 'I'm unlawfully present in the United States,' we're not going take your oath into the military, but we're going to take your deposition and we have a bus for you to Tijuana. That's the law."

To representatives who haven't yet signed the discharge petition: You should sign this petition now and show your constituents that Congressman King doesn't speak for you.

To anyone who's reading: This is why we organize. America is both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws, and we refuse to allow statements like this to represent us.

OFA volunteers are organizing by passing out flyers, making phone calls, and mobilizing constituents in key districts to pass this crucial legislation. We will end Congress's inaction.

This isn't up to Speaker Boehner anymore. Join us in this fight. With your help, this could do it.
