• Organizing: A Civic Duty

    Markus is IN

Markus P. was packing up his college dorm room and preparing for his graduation from Hampton University in Southern Virginia when he got an email from Jeremy Bird, the National Field Director at Obama for America. Suddenly, all of the anxiety that an unemployed post-graduate experiences disappeared because Markus knew he was going to come back to his home to Illinois to become a summer organizer. Now that the summer is over, Markus has decided to stay on as a Fall Fellow and continue to play a role in the reelection of President Obama in 2012.

“I felt like it was my civic duty to the President to be an organizer. President Obama inspired an entire generation and taught us that being young doesn’t mean you can’t accomplish extraordinary things."

In 2008, Markus helped turn Virginia blue by working around the clock knocking on doors and making phone calls.

“Canvassing in Southern Virginia in 2008 became the main social activity on campus; everyone was at the campaign office.”

Although this is not Markus’ first time working on President Obama’s presidential campaign, he learned new things every day this summer and recognizes that as amazing as the 2008 campaign was, the 2012 campaign is going to be much better!

Fall Fellows will be working all over the country these next few months to help build a grassroots foundation for President Obama’s reelection in 2012. To track their progress, follow hashtag #FallFellows11 on Twitter.
