• Obama Organizing Fellow Spotlight: Nellie

This week is Fellows Week in Illinois. To celebrate, we're honoring a few of our current and former Obama Organizing Fellows by sharing their stories until the Illinois application deadline on May 21st.

What’s your proudest accomplishment as a fellow?

Just being accepted to the program is a huge accomplishment for me. I love telling people that I was the first spring fellow accepted in the state of Illinois.

What have you learned in your role as Obama fellow?

Being a fellow has exposed me to all sorts of people, from stay-at-home moms to lawyers and IT professionals. The common cause uniting such a diverse group is a resounding faith in President Obama. This faith doesn't come from an abstract place of promises or aspirations, instead it lies in the impact the President's policies have had on each of them.

What stands out most about your fellows experience?

I am working for the candidate with a record of change to stand on, and that change is felt in a very real way by every American.

What do you think of when you hear respect, empower, include, win?

Respect means so much more than "live and let live" in the Obama campaign. It means reaching beyond a place of tolerance and finding each volunteer's unique value. I encounter really enthusiastic volunteers who may not be the best at what is most needed. My job is to empower them to do things they didn't think they could by using the skills they do have or help them develop new ones. I’m always asking myself, “How can we include this person?”

Why should someone apply for the summer fellows program?

The fellows program offers training in a wide range of highly applicable job skills. As a fellow you hone face- to- face, written, and telephone communication skills. Fellows are event planners, HR specialists, leaders and team players all rolled into one. More than applicable job training, people who care about moving this country forward should apply.

Do you have any advice for those who will be accepted into the program?

Take the time to learn about your volunteers. Respect the unique gifts of everyone who comes in to participate. That's what makes us different than the other guys – we really are grassroots, and that is why we're going to win!
