• “I spoke with Obama without even realizing it”

Upon hearing the news that Barack Obama had won the 2008 presidential election, Ramey W., Illinois’ newest field organizer, called his mother who had told him as a child that one day he would witness the election of the first African-American President.

His mother, Ida, then asked him if he remembered when then-Senator Obama called their Chicago home. It turned out then-Senator Obama and his mother had worked together in the past.

“I’ve answered the phone plenty of times and actually spoke with Senator Obama without even realizing it. Absolutely crazy! I would just tell him to hold on as I did everyone that called looking for my mother. I still laugh at this.”

This summer, Ramey participated in the Summer Organizer program through Organizing for America in Chicago. Ramey knew that it would be a great experience.

“I thought it was an opportunity to serve my President, my country, my state, my city, and most importantly, my community.”

Last month, Ramey’s hard work as a summer organizer paid off: he was offered a position as a field organizer in Illinois.

“I organize because the ones before me organized. I organize because the ones before me expect me to pick up the torch and continue what they have started. I organize because without organization there can be no leadership. I organize because the next generation depends on me to organize today for their tomorrow.”

Check back here for updates on Ramey! He and other organizers will be working hard these next few months to continue to build up a grassroots organization across Illinois, and they need your help! Find a local event or sign up to volunteer.
