Name: Sam Brown
Job Title: Chief of Staff—Finance
Where are you from? Minneapolis, MN
Where are you based? Chicago, IL
Q1. What does a day at work look like for you?
I spend most of my day making sure that all the money raised for the campaign from all the various sources actually makes it into our bank account. With the end of this financial quarter on Friday, this week is very busy.
I also manage the day-to-day operations of the finance staff both here in Chicago and in our six regional satellite offices around the country, helping to set the goals for all of our finance regions and events. It’s not all numbers—I also work closely with the tech and digital departments to come up with new, creative fundraising ideas.
Q2. How did you first come to the campaign?
In a previous life, I used to work in Los Angeles, where I met National Finance Director Rufus Gifford. We became fast friends and left our jobs to work on the 2004 John Kerry Presidential race. We never looked back and have been raising money for Democratic races ever since. In 2007-08 I was a finance deputy for southern California.
Q3. What's your favorite part of your job?
Working closely with all the departments on the campaign and meeting so many great, talented people.
Q4. What is the most unexpected part of your job?
I had no idea how many people we can fit into 50,000 square feet of office space!
Q5. Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
My wife Lacey and I are expecting our first child in March. I'm looking forward to absolutely no sleep until November 7th, 2012!
