Did you know that the Affordable Care Act protects transgender Americans’ right to quality health care?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently clarified that President Obama’s health care reform law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity or against those who do not “conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity” by any health care provider that receives federal funds.

Given the discrimination that transgender people so often face when trying to access health care, transgender advocates have applauded this news. Maya Rupert, federal policy director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights said:

“We are grateful to HHS for clarifying this important policy and providing transgender people with the security of knowing they are included in the administration’s commitment to the health and well-being of all Americans.”
