President’s Remarks at National Prayer Breakfast
By on
On Thursday, February 2, President Obama addressed the National Prayer Breakfast for the fourth time. The President affirmed the role of faith in making our country strong, and he reflected on the importance of faith in his own life. He discussed how he has led with his values in supporting economic fairness, shared responsibility, extending a hand to the poor at home, and showing compassion for those who are suffering abroad. In order to face the challenges of our day, the President said, "We can't leave our values at the door."
The President also lifted up the vital work of faith-based organizations from across the country—many of which work in partnership with the Obama administration—as examples of the power of Americans acting on their most deeply held values.
The President closed by telling the story of his visit with Rev. Billy Graham as President, and his time "on top of a mountain, saying a prayer for Billy Graham—a man whose faith had changed the world and that had sustained him through triumphs and tragedies, and movements and milestones."
He concluded: "I have fallen on my knees with great regularity since that moment -- asking God for guidance not just in my personal life and my Christian walk, but in the life of this nation and in the values that hold us together and keep us strong. I know that He will guide us. He always has, and He always will. And I pray his richest blessings on each of you in the days ahead."
