This week President Obama reinforced his commitment to conserving America’s outdoor heritage by designating Colorado’s Chimney Rock a national monument – an action that preserves thousands of acres of land and pays tribute to the great spiritual significance of the Chimney rock archeological area. Because of President Obama’s action, generations of Americans will be able to travel to Colorado and learn the history of the Pueblo tribe that resided there over 1,000 years ago and understand our nation’s ongoing legacy of preserving our natural wonders.[1] And it’s part of President Obama’s forward-looking environmental vision that’s protecting our natural resources, creating jobs and encouraging tourism, preserving habitats and ensuring that future generations can enjoy our nation’s outdoor heritage.

Since the beginning of his term, he’s been rebuilding important environmental safeguards to protecting America’s parks and wildlife after a previous decade of neglect. President Obama is investing in conservation projects in all 50 states to conserve wildlife and lands and create outdoor-recreation jobs across the country. He signed one of the largest expansions of wilderness protections in a generation, setting aside more than 2 million acres as protected wilderness, protecting for conservation more than 1,000 miles of rivers and 26 million acres of historically-significant landscapes, and adding thousands of miles of trails.

But where President Obama is committed to protecting and preserving our natural heritage, Mitt Romney’s record and proposals reveal a different story. He lacks a commitment to America’s outdoors and vision to preserve for future generations. As Massachusetts governor, Romney reduced public land and conservation funding. The Romney-Ryan budget could sell off 3.3 million of acres of national parks and public lands and could cause local governments to sell their public lands as well, in order to cover drastic cuts to local aid.

Just as President Obama is moving us forward in protecting and preserving our environment and natural heritage, Mitt Romney would take us back, abandoning the great American tradition of protecting wildlife and open spaces.
