Knocking on doors or making calls can be a little intimidating at first.

So I always tell my teams here in Iowa: Practice your pitch.

My background is in theatre—and I’ve always practiced my field pitch just like I would rehearse lines for a play. It seems awkward and dorky, but it works. Find a friend, a co-worker, or a family member to call up and rehearse your pitch with over the phone. Each time you practice it out loud, you will get better.

Whether you’re talking health care, or immigration reform, or LGBT equality, practicing your pitch can be the difference in bringing a new voter onboard.
