Illinois-based Heartland Alliance’s new online resource center, RainbowWelcome.org, is providing LGBT refugees and asylum seekers with the information they need to safely and successfully integrate into new communities, thanks to a grant provided by Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families.
In December of 2011, President Obama issued a memorandum directing all U.S. agencies operating abroad to diplomatically advocate for LGBT human rights wherever the United States provided assistance. He specifically recognized that "LGBT persons who seek refuge from violence and persecution face daunting challenges," and provided, "the departments of State, Justice, and Homeland security shall enhance their ongoing efforts to ensure that LGBT refugees and asylum seekers have equal access to protection and assistance."
Enabling Heartland Alliance’s initiative is one powerful application of the Obama administration’s pledge to promote universal LGBT rights and end violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
