“My grandfather, a World War II veteran, paid his taxes, paid his bills, saved his money, and bought what was excellent health insurance at the time. But when my grandmother had a severe stroke, she had to move to a nursing home for care. She could not talk, walk, or even move more than one arm. Soon after, my grandfather was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. While he was dying in the hospital, the insurance company decided to discontinue payment for my grandmother’s nursing home, arguing my grandfather was ‘well enough to take care of her at home.’ He died a month later. She died two months after that.

“My grandfather was a war hero. He survived the Bataan Death March and two years in a war prison camp. After the war, he continued to serve this country in the Air Force. He did everything a responsible American is supposed to do, but when he needed the insurance company to honor their contract with him, they put profit ahead of doing the right thing.

“I believe health care is a human right. President Obama has my unwavering support because he has made health care more affordable and accessible. I want to know my family and I will be protected by our health insurance, no matter what. I want everyone else to be covered, too. I do not ever want to go back to letting insurance companies be able to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions.”
