Christian, a regional field director in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is working with volunteers and organizers to gear up for a big weekend of action event for Juneteenth. Christian talks about why Juneteenth matters so much to the community:

“Juneteenth is an event commemorating the day when a community of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas first learned of their freedom, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, African Americans across the country choose Juneteenth as a time of reflection and appreciation for the enormity of the moment for our collective history as Americans. In Chester City, the community celebrates each year with an event-packed weekend of arts and culture.

“We want to get our volunteer teams in the Chester City area to get out and register as many people as possible. I joined this campaign because OFA, at its core, is about empowering citizens, and bringing more voices into the political process. Our volunteers take that charge and work every day to engage people and talk with them about how they can have a hand in making this country great.

“I think it's only right that we commemorate Juneteenth, a day that we celebrate as a day of empowerment for African Americans, with a day of action where we invite our fellow community members to become voters.”

Join other volunteers to help register voters in your community this weekend.
