Meredith, an auditor in Virginia, donates because she can see the ways in which President Obama has helped her community.
“Donating to President Obama’s campaign was quite convenient—it was a simple click here and there. It really was no big deal, and I figured, ‘I like the guy. I can donate six or seven bucks.’ I’d love to be able to write a check for $1,000, but it’s just not that simple. I have to ask myself, ‘How is my grocery bill this week? Can I donate $6 or do I have to spend it on food?’ It’s a gamble. You have to believe that President Obama is going to win again. If you do chip in $6 or whatever you can, he’s $6 more likely to win.
“Where my parents live in Pennsylvania, there was a bridge that was collapsing just off the main street going into their neighborhood. At the time the township couldn’t afford to fix the bridge, so they narrowed the two-way traffic down to one lane. Traffic in both directions was forced to stop to ensure that there was no oncoming traffic. Then President Obama put his Recovery Act through, and it covered a lot of infrastructure. With this act the township was able to obtain the needed funds and fix the bridge—a bridge that actually goes somewhere. I call it the Obama bridge, and when I cross it I find myself smiling and saying, ‘Yay Obama!’
“When I was in seventh grade, George W. Bush was running for the first time, and my teacher asked us to write down who we’d vote for and why. I wrote down, ‘I want to vote for Bush because he looks like a nice guy.’ Luckily, I’m more educated now in the art of politics, and I have a better understanding of the challenges placed before President Obama. I liked him from the beginning not only because he’s very smart, but he can just look at a situation and realize what struggles will be faced and determine how to cross those barriers with all parties in mind.
“President Obama knows that there is a time to laugh, a time to cry, and a time to be serious, and he does this all while keeping his family values at his core. I believe that the First Family has provided this country with a wonderful positive example of a strong family bond. President Obama has led this country with honesty and integrity, and I vote for his continued leadership of this country.”
