Volunteers flooded NYC headquarters to make phone calls without any expectations other than contributing to our volunteer recruitment effort. Two and a half hours into the phone bank, Congresswoman and Chair of the DNC Debbie Wasserman Schultz surprised volunteers and Summer Organizers as she walked into the 4th floor office.
Wasserman Schultz shared her personal story as fellow Democrats excitedly gathered around her. A native New Yorker, Wasserman Schultz enthusiastically stated, “You can take the girl out of New York, but you can never take New York out of the girl.” One of the more poignant moments for the youth in the room occurred when Wasserman Schultz talked about her entry into public office at the age of 25, and her dedication to the Party ever since.
Wasserman Schultz thanked volunteers for their commitment, and expressed that she, too, began as a volunteer canvassing. She then opened the discussion up to questions about current political dynamics. Afterwards, she graciously shook hands with everyone in the office before leaving.
Following her visit, volunteers and Summer Organizers were feeling inspired and energized. Summer Organizer Aaron L.’s reaction to the unexpected visit—“ I was really excited and happy that [she] would stop by our office to motivate us.” Aaron’s sentiments seemed to capture those of all who were lucky enough to be there for Wasserman Schultz’s visit.
