“For me, President Obama means equality. He supports marriage equality, which, if passed, would allow me and my partner of 20 years, Phil, to get married. We are currently registered as domestic partners and I can tell you firsthand that domestic partnerships don’t give you the same rights that married spouses enjoy. Before meeting Phil, I was in a committed, 23-year-long relationship; when my partner passed away, I had no rights to handle his funeral proceedings. And I know that today, if I passed away, my social security benefits couldn’t be transferred over to Phil. I feel very strongly that these are not rights we should be excluded from, and I’m glad that President Obama agrees.

“I first got involved with the Obama campaign in the fall of 2007. I was at an event and I put my name on a ticket when I walked in. A couple of days later I got a phone call. The person on the other line said, ‘Hey Becca, can you help Barack Obama become the President of the United States?’
“My jaw dropped as I thought, ‘How can I help Barack Obama become the President of the United States?’ But I said yes. Yes, I wanted to help elect someone I believed in to be the President of the United States.

They hit the streets at voter registration drives and packed the house at Get Out the Vote trainings to talk strategy and plan future events. “When my son Charlie was born this past winter, everything changed—as I am sure my fellow moms can attest, nothing will ever be the same. Becoming a mother has been the greatest gift I’ve ever received—and as a mom, I want to be sure I do everything I can to protect the future of our country for my children.
“I have been a supporter of the President for a long time, but now, with a growing family, I feel it’s even more imperative that we re-elect President Obama and keep moving the country forward. We can’t afford to go back to the failed policies of the past, and I know that the President is looking out for the best interests of families like mine. Policies like the Affordable Care Act will ensure that my family has access to affordable health care coverage. The Race to the Top initiative and expanded access to Pell Grants will help ensure that my kids have access to better educational opportunities in the future. And those are only two of many, many reasons that we must turn our support into action.

As we continue to bring new people into this campaign for the last 46 days, it's important that we’re treating them right and running events that they want to return to.
Here are a few ways to keep them coming back:
Have a greeter welcome people and direct them to the sign-in table. The last thing a new volunteer wants is to feel awkward or think they are in the wrong place.
Create a strong sense of community. Pair up and share why you’re here today and why this election matters to you.
Get your new friends to recommit. The easiest volunteers to schedule for future shifts are the ones who’ve just volunteered. Get them signed up for another shift before they walk out the door.
Help us grow this campaign all the way to the finish line.

My name is Oscar Torres-Luqui. I was born in Paraguy, but I immigrated to United States in 1971 with my wife and two kids. I’ve lived the last 40 years of my life in Woodbridge, Virginia. My grandfather was a lawyer, my father was a lawyer, and I was also a lawyer in Paraguy for 15 years. When I came to the United States, I worked in law for a very long time, but I retired in July of this year.
I have in my heart the American dream. I came to this country for this dream and I’m so grateful that I was given a chance. President Obama is continuing that legacy. He’s fighting for a bipartisan agreement on a new immigration law. He has the right approach, and it would help everyone really. We all have something great to contribute to the country. I started out as a busboy, but I became a lawyer. My grandson served this country in Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s why I was so happy to see President Obama give all of those DREAMers a chance at work permits. These kids are American in their hearts and they deserve a chance. They came here seeking the dream of America—we cannot destroy that. Obama is fighting for that dream and those DREAMers.
So I’m planning to do more volunteer work whenever I can between now and Election Day. I want to leave something good for the next generations. I want to give back what I received from this great country. I want to be a part of something bigger than myself. That’s what I get out of volunteering.

“I got involved in this election because I couldn't sit it out. I'm a student, so when the summer rolled around I joined the President's organizing fellowship program to invest my time and energy working to re-elect President Obama and keep the country moving forward. The President thinks in terms of actual people, which is an incredibly important thing.
“Spending my summer as an organizing fellow was an incredibly important experience for me. Before my fellowship, I would keep my political thoughts to myself. Doing this organizing though, it was my job to talk with everyone I met—family, friends, strangers, literally everyone—about the stakes in this election and why I support the President. I took my organizing to Facebook, too, to share what I'm passionate about. And it also helped me understand which issues I care about most. I'm particularly vested in issues that impact women: controlling our own health care decisions, earning equal pay for equal work, and deciding for ourselves when it's time to start a family.
“On all these issues there is a stark, stark contrast between President Obama and Mitt Romney.
