Wisconsin: Ellen Gangnon

My name is Ellen Gangnon. I’m a wife, a daughter of a World War II veteran, a mother of four, a grandmother of six, and a retired first grade teacher. I taught for over 20 years, and now I’m a volunteer organizer for Obama here in Waukesha County and Germantown, Wisconsin.

In June of 2008, I retired from teaching and I was ready to volunteer somewhere but I wasn’t quite sure where. Now that I had some more time, I was able to really focus in the political situation in this country and I became aware of a young state senator named Barack Obama. I was concerned about the Iraq war, the unstable economy, and I just found him so inspiring—so I got involved. I wanted to start a team in Pewaukee, where I live, so I threw a house party. The first time, only four people there, but for my second one, I had about 25 people. Things moved quickly from there!

Time to talk

One of the best ways to help Team Obama-Biden is by talking to voters in battleground states. And now that early voting has begun in states like Iowa and Ohio, you can help get out the vote right from your couch or kitchen table.

Wondering what to say? The Obama 2012 call tool gives you a simple script to follow. For example, your conversation with Ohio voters would go something like this:

Organizing tip: Get a commitment!

Getting a commitment is the first step to getting a voter to the polls. And as voting continues in Ohio and in other states throughout the country, it’s incredibly important right now.

Once you're familiar with voting locations and hours where you live, you'll be set to have conversations with anyone—whether at people's doorsteps on a Saturday afternoon canvass or when you bump into your friend grocery shopping. Encourage everyone you meet to make a plan to get to the polls or vote early if they can.

“Are you free during your lunch break at 1:00 p.m. on Monday? Can you carpool with a coworker?” Get that conversation started and end it with a vote for President Obama!

Vermont: Sara Eisemann

My name is Sara Eisemann and I grew up in Manchester, Vermont. In 2008, I was a college freshman, and everyone around me was really excited to vote for the first time, but I was still 17. I was completely devastated that I couldn’t vote for Obama in the election, but that only lasted about 10 minutes before I realized there were tons of ways for me to make a difference. I got involved with the group on campus, and on Election Day, I drove up to New Hampshire, and went around helping out with the get-out-the-vote effort. It was just one day, but I really felt like I had been a part of something great. I was watching the results for the counties come in and I thought to myself, “I was there! I brought those people to the polls!”

I just graduated from Tufts University in Boston this spring and now I’m working as one of the fall fellows for the campaign, so this is my first real job out of college. I realized that if I did anything else this fall other than work on the campaign, I would regret it. I’m working full time for the campaign, which means every hour of every day I’m thinking about how I can make a difference.

Office opening of the week: South Miami

On the night of September 6th, a small group of neighbors gathered around a television in South Miami to watch Barack Obama accept his party’s nomination for President of the United States. The hosts of the evening, Michael and Chris, along with their daughters Kayla and Trina, have been deeply involved with the President’s re-election campaign, so they invited their friends over for a Democratic National Convention watch party.

By the end of the night, the group made a unanimous decision: They needed a campaign office of their own, in their neighborhood, where they could collaborate and coordinate efforts to help the President win re-election.

Exactly one month later, on October 6th, Michael, Chris, and almost 100 others gathered again—this time, at a transformed storefront on Southwest 70th Street, to celebrate the opening of a brand new Organizing for America office.

They were joined by businessman Russell Simmons, who inspired the crowd with a reminder of how important their work is.

“It’s critical that we get the President re-elected—that we give it all we’ve got,” he said.

The Sunshine State is not alone—today’s the last day to register in many other states as well: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
