Chants of “We want Joe!” rang throughout Zane Grey Elementary School today as the crowd in Zanesville, Ohio anxiously awaited the Vice President. Here’s what a few of the folks in the audience had to say about Vice President Biden’s visit, and President Obama’s plan to strengthen the middle class:

Their entire platform is wrong. Mitt Romney never mentioned the military or the wars in his acceptance speech, and I think it's an absolute shame. President Obama has a good handle on the needs of everyday Americans, and he's responded to them. My reasons for supporting Obama and Biden are bigger than a town or issue, though—it's about the future of our country over the next several decades. That's why I'm going to volunteer—to make sure President Obama and Joe Biden are re-elected.”

Accepting the nomination for Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden talked about watching President Obama work in the White House:
“Folks, I’ve watched him. He has never wavered. He never, never backs down. He always steps up. And he always asks in every one of those critical meetings the same fundamental question: How is this going to affect the average American? How is this going to affect people's lives? That's what's inside this man. That's what makes him tick. That's who he is. And folks, because of the decisions he has made, and the incredible strength of the American people, America has turned the corner.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to tell you what I think you already know, but I watch it up close—bravery resides in the heart of Barack Obama. And time and time again, I witnessed him summon it. This man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart, and a spine of steel. And because of all the actions he took, because of the calls he made, because of the determination of American workers—and the unparalled bravery of our special forces—we can now proudly say what you've heard me say the last six months: Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive!”
“The choice is stark. Two different visions. Two different value sets. But at its core, the difference is able to be reduced to a fundamental difference. You see? You, we, most Americans, have incredible faith in the decency and hard work of the American people, and we know what has made this country—it's the American people!”
“My fellow Americans, we now find ourselves at the hinge of history. And the direction we turn is, not figuratively, is literally in your hands.”

—Vice President Joe Biden in Detroit
At a Labor Day street parade in Detroit today, the Vice President spoke to union members, their families, and neighbors. Here’s what some folks had to say about the holiday visit:
"I'm a lifelong Democrat and believe in what the Democrats stand for. I want to see President Obama re-elected. The auto industry is doing better, and we need to protect the middle class. I'm seeing improvements in my neighborhood since the auto rescue, with abandoned houses now being rehabilitated."

“[But] for the sacrifices you made, and the courage of the President, all those GM plants would have closed. The 200,000 auto workers who’ve been added to the employment rolls would not be working. And a million jobs would have been lost.”
—Vice President Biden on the auto industry recovery
“What he’s doing is great. He’s on the right track, and we need to keep him office to keep things working and to make sure we don’t go back. A lot of people would have been laid off, and if the industry went under, people would have lost their pensions.”
—Philip, retired auto industry worker

Pat, a volunteer in Maryland, tells the story of the one call she and her fellow phone-bankers never expected to get:
"A couple weeks ago, my husband, his father, and our youngest son went to a Nationals game. I had to stay behind because I was holding a phone bank at our house.
"My son was getting something from the concession stand when he saw Vice President Biden standing there. My son called my husband, Steve, and said, 'Dad, come down, the Vice President is here!' He came down, and they walked over to say hi to the Vice President and started chatting. My husband said, 'My wife is very involved with the campaign—she's a phone bank coordinator in Rockville.' And the Vice President said, 'Oh, I know Rockville!' My husband went on to say, 'She's holding a phone bank as we speak! It would be great if you could say hello to her.' So the Vice President said, 'Sure!'"
