“This story could be yours”

Dear Undecided Voters,

I am writing this letter to share our story. It’s an election year, but my letter is not meant to spark an argument about candidates or politics. I hope to put a human face on a very large public policy decision that matters.

However, I do want to make sure you know that Mitt Romney has vowed, on Day One, to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And I want you to know how frightening that is for our family.

So I tell this story for my son, Cameron, but this story could be yours.

Cameron suffered from kidney disease from the time he was six months old. Unfortunately, his kidneys failed when he was in high school, and he had to go on dialysis for eight months. Thankfully, our dear friend volunteered to be a donor, and Cameron received this new kidney and a new life his junior year in high school. We are forever thankful to our friend and the doctors and nurses who took care of him. And we are forever grateful to Blue Cross and Blue Shield, our insurance company.

"My husband is on disability. Decades of working in construction left him with chronic back pain, a high tolerance for pain medication and, eventually, depression. For years he was seeing a number of health care professionals and taking multiple medications at once, leaving us with thousands of dollars in hospital fees and doctors’ bills each month. Our co-payments were so high that we realized the only way to ease our burden was to declare bankruptcy. It’s horrible to realize that your income is no longer enough to live on and that you can’t support your family.

We save money on bills and prescriptions because the professionals treating my husband now have to communicate with each other about his care. We’re also able to access Medicare now, which helps us pay for his medical expenses. My husband and I feel much more secure now.

“I make sure I give something—even if it’s a little bit. President Obama is out there fighting. He isn’t simply fighting for himself—he is fighting for all people. I see what he’s trying to do. “The dialysis treatments I need to survive cost $259 each, so I don’t know what I’d do without health care coverage. Obamacare is only going to make things better for me and for everyone else. No one will have to worry about getting bills we can’t afford to pay or having a lifetime limit.

Florida seniors talk Medicare with the President

“I had a wonderful breakfast with two retired couples over at Cocoa, Gerry and Jan and John and Shirley … After a lifetime of work, they've been able to save enough to have a comfortable retirement, but that's only because Medicare is there, rock-solid for them; only because we have made that commitment that says if you work hard all your life, then you should have some basic security—not to live lavishly, but to know that it's going to be there for you.”

As part of his post-convention bus tour through Florida, President Obama sat down with a few Florida seniors to talk about their Medicare—then he took his message to the crowd in Melbourne, Florida.
