• Around the Office: Stefan Schaffer

In this series, we will be introducing you to the regulars around our California offices. In this “Around the Office” blog, meet Stefan Schaffer—a Regional Field Director in Northern California.

I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. I lived there for 14 years before moving to Ellicott City, Maryland, where my family currently resides. I endured college in a colder environment -- Providence, Rhode Island -- before making the trek west just over two years ago. I originally came to California to pursue graduate studies at UC Berkeley and have since found a niche in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland.

How did you get involved with Organizing for America?

I received an e-mail in my inbox that asked if I knew of any good candidates for the OFA Summer Organizer program. Then, I was forwarded the same e-mail three times over the course of the day. It kind of sunk in that I might fit the bill -- so I decided to act on my desire to support President Obama and applied.

What is your favorite part of the job?

The diversity of people I get to work with. It is a privilege to be alongside individuals with such different backgrounds, who all share a common desire to connect with their community on behalf of the President.

What is one piece of advice you have for new organizers?

Jump in! You’ll never know just how capable you are as an organizer until you fully commit--you’ll learn so much about yourself and others along the way.

Tell us something you learned this week.

I learned that my family first settled in the United States in the late 18th century.

What is one of your goals for February?

I hope to visit volunteers out in the field more often. I am located in the Oakland OFA Headquarters most of the time, and I don't get as much face-to-face time with volunteers as I'd like.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I have been told my spirit animal is a red panda. Most likely because of their supreme ability to appreciate naps.
